The House of Ideation: Audemars Piguet’s 150-Year Legacy of Mechanical Artistry and Architectural Vision

  • June 19, 2026

Where Fine Watchmaking Meets Avant-Garde Culture

Audemars Piguet (AP) has long established itself as a pinnacle of haute horlogerie, focusing on time-telling mastery, astronomical calendars, escapement mechanisms, and high-complication craftsmanship. Beyond pure mechanics, the brand has seamlessly transcended the boundaries of traditional watchmaking.

The “House of Ideation”: A Journey Through Seven Thematic Spheres

To celebrate this historical milestone, AP has unveiled a brand-new exhibition at its Musée Atelier in Le Brassus. Entitled “The House of Ideation,” the exhibition draws creative inspiration from the brand’s historic workshop built in 1907. It invites global visitors to step back into the very heart of the AP universe through the unique perspectives of the visionaries, watchmakers, and artisans whose passion, ingenuity, and mastery shaped the brand’s history.

The exhibition is thoughtfully curated into seven dedicated zones, including the Astronomical Observatory, the Secrets of Mechanics, the Design Vault, and the Time Gallery. Together, these spaces trace AP’s rich chronology while paying a vibrant tribute to the exceptional talents who have continuously pushed the boundaries of horological craftsmanship. Enhanced by immersive, fairytale-inspired scenography, the exhibition allows visitors to explore the Portrait Gallery—unveiling precious, never-before-seen archival documents—and wander into a mystical indoor forest filled with unexpected surprises.

Bridging Stars and Society: The Intersection of Horology and Philanthropy

A notable highlight of the exhibition is the debut of a brand-new installation inspired by astronomy and watchmaking. Situated within the Founders’ Hall, this interactive area underscores a fundamental truth: the craft of watchmaking is inherently an extension of astronomy itself. It serves as an apt backdrop for AP to celebrate its 150th anniversary by showcasing three new universal-crown perpetual calendar watches, which perfectly encapsulate this cosmic connection.

Crucially, this zone also illuminates the Audemars Piguet Foundation’s vital commitments beyond the realm of timekeeping. Visitors can witness the brand’s dedication to environmental preservation and social welfare initiatives, demonstrating how a legacy built on measuring time can be utilized to protect the future of the planet and its communities.

Architectural Harmony: The Double-Helix Musée Atelier by BIG

The physical container of this heritage is as groundbreaking as the timepieces inside. Designed by the world-renowned architecture firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), the Musée Atelier’s architecture takes direct inspiration from the circular, kinetic energy-transfer structures found within mechanical watches.

The building features a stunning, pioneering double-helix design. This form serves a dual purpose: it allows visitors to gaze out at the sweeping, serene vistas of the Vallée de Joux, while seamlessly supporting the sweeping roof structure. As visitors journey through the museum, they walk along a clockwise, downward-sloping trajectory. The expansive glass facades are wrapped in a sophisticated brass mesh grid, which intelligently regulates natural light and indoor temperature.

At the absolute center of this architectural spiral lie the active watchmaking workshops and the art center. By placing working craftsmen at the core of the structure, the building injects a living soul into the magnificent mechanical feats and design triumphs on display.

Ultimately, Audemars Piguet’s 150th-anniversary celebration is more than a retrospective of past achievements; it is a profound testament to a legacy that refuses to stand still. By intertwining the cosmic origins of time with radical architecture and contemporary culture, AP proves that haute horlogerie is not a static tradition, but a living, breathing art form. As “The House of Ideation” connects the quiet valleys of Le Brassus to the vibrant landscapes of Shanghai and Dubai, it reminds the world that while seconds are fleeting, true craftsmanship is timeless. AP enters its next sesquicentennial precisely as it began—with an open mind, a collaborative spirit, and a relentless drive to shape the future of time.
